TITLE:           Special Education Hearing Impaired Support Aide - Sign Language Facilitator

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To assist teachers in providing for the individual needs of the student in order for each student to achieve his/her maximum academic and social potential.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Hold the minimum of a high school diploma/GED
2. Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Certification (VQAS) is desired
3. Be at least 21 years of age
4. Have good physical and emotional health
5. Possess good character and leadership qualities
6. Display an interest and ability in working with special education students

Areas of focused responsibility include:

• Interpreter services
• Supervision
• Assigned instructional tasks

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To provide signed interpretation for oral communication between hearing impaired student and hearing individuals within the educational environment
2. To comply with specific assignments and duties outlined by the teacher/principal
3. To comply with all school board policies and State laws relative to special education classroom operation
4. To assist the teacher in implementing daily and long-range lesson plans for assigned student(s), including supervision
5. To utilize planning time effectively
6. To assist the teacher in the preparation of classroom materials
7. To assist the teacher in providing for the individual needs, abilities, and interests of the students
8. To assume a fair share of the classroom duties as outlined by the classroom teacher
9. To exhibit the necessary physical, mental, and emotional ability to execute duties as outlined by the teacher and principal
10. To comply with contracted work hour schedules
11. To perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or special education teacher
