TITLE:  BUS AIDE – SPECIAL EDUCATION

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

 

To work with the bus driver as directed in supporting positive behaviors in students; providing support and physical assistance as needed to transport students safely and efficiently to and from school on a daily basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Hold the minimum of a high school diploma/GED.
  2. Certificate of Autism Spectrum Disorder training *www.vcuautismcenter.org/training/paraprofessionals.cfm
  3. Be at least 21 years of age.
  4. Must meet physical requirements and have good emotional health.
  5. Possess good character, patience and judgment.
  6. Display an interest, patience, and ability to working with special education students with behavior challenges.

 

*This position will be filled on the basis of competency, physical conditions, and experiences/qualifications of the applicant.

 

REPORTS TO:  Bus Driver / Principal / Director of Transportation

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Comply with contracted work hour schedules.
  2. Comply with assignments and duties outlined by the Director of Transportation.
  3. Comply with all school board policies, State laws relative to special education operations, and directions given by the bus driver.
  4. Providing for the individual needs of the students including the management of behaviors; provides direct assistance to students.
  5. To exercise every possible care for the safety and comfort of the pupils in route and to permit no pupil to ride on the outside of the bus or with head, hands, or arms out of the windows.
  6. To assist with daily pre-trip inspections of the bus, report any needed repairs, and exercise every possible care of the bus.
  7. Assist the bus driver by monitoring and/or reinforcing positive behavior.
  8. Implements behavior management plans/programs, and helps to maintain order while bus is in route.
  9. To make all reports, attend meetings and training sessions required by school authorities.
  10. Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
  11. Assume duties as outlined for recordkeeping.
  12. Exhibit the necessary physical, mental, and emotional ability to execute all duties as outlined.
  13. Assist student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks to include, wheelchairs, lifting student into seats, fastening seatbelts/wheelchair straps, car seats, loading and unloading the bus, lifting, and assistance with mobility.
  14. To prevent any object being placed in the bus that will restrict passageway to entrance or emergency door, and to keep bottles or other loose objects off the floor.
  15. Provide assistance to meet the physical and medical needs of student(s)
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or special education teacher.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move/step-up on and off school bus.  The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear.  The employee is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.  May need to intercede in cases of physical altercations between students.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:       181 Day Contract (4 - 5.5 hrs per day)

 

EVALUATION:

 

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certificated personnel.
